  1. Any of a set of debilitating long-term
  2. diseases caused by a trypanosome (protozoan
  3. of the genus Trypanosoma). They include
  4. sleeping sickness (nagana) in Africa,
  5. transmitted by the bites of tsetse flies, and
  6. Chagas' disease in the Americas, spread by
  7. assassin bugs. Trypanosomes can live in the
  8. bloodstream of humans and other vertebrates.
  9. Millions of people are affected in warmer
  10. regions of the world; the diseases also
  11. affect cattle, horses, and wild animals,
  12. which form a reservoir of infection.
